Anuenue is Hawaiian for ‘rainbow’.

Hawaii is known as ‘The Rainbow State’, and even has rainbows on vehicle licence plates. The islands are set in the prime location and have the perfect climate for creating stunning rainbows, the Hawaiian Islands also have an absolutely breathtakingly beautiful backdrop to showcase the rainbows, from the giant looming volcanoes to the white sandy beaches.

Rainbows are majestic and have been thought of as being magical by many, whether it has a pot of gold at the rainbows end, or a magical arc that can fire arrows, every culture has a tale to tell about them.

In Hawaiian culture the appearance of a rainbow is thought to be a message or a sign from the gods to say they approve of something that has happened or of something that is being planned. Some also believe that a rainbow is a bridge from one world to the next, allowing a selected few to travel between earth and Heaven as they wish.

The science behind the creation of a rainbow is quite interesting. When a droplet of water is hit by a ray of light, some of the rays of light are bent in the water drops and are reflected, creating the amazing natural phenomena.

Double rainbows are a beautiful sight to see, fascinatingly, the second rainbow has the colours reversed ! Triple rainbows are a little less common to see. If you are really lucky, you may even see a moonbow. These are created in the same way as a rainbow, but they use the light of the moon instead of the light from the sun.
